CITY COUNCIL 02-23-06 ADDITIONAL ITEM AGENDA AMENDED 02/21/2006 ADDITIONAL ITEM NEW BUSINESS 3. Authorize Purchase of a Replacement Tailgate for Refuse Truck # 185 PRESENTED BY SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC WORKS MICHAEL THOMAS (615-4265) Each year beginning in January, the City’s Fleet Maintenance Section performs “I- P.M.’s” (preventative maintenance) on each of the eight refuse trucks. Each truck is thoroughly cleaned and inspected for cracks, leaks, and significant wear. This maintenance is performed after the Christmas holiday and concludes in late March when the refuse tonnage increases. Truck # 185, a 1998 Volvo with a McNeilus packer body, was the first McNeilus packer truck purchased by the City. It is McNeilus’ standard, light duty packer truck and is in need of a new tailgate. The front, rear, and sidewalls of the hopper have each been previously lined and are in need of new steel. The supports for the hopper are cracked and the liner is worn thin. The dump edge and sweep blade are bent and in need of replacement. Attached are pictures showing the needed work and the quotation from McNeilus. Approximately $30,000 is budgeted each year in the Fleet Maintenance budget to perform needed work on the refuse fleet. In the past this work was completed as part of the Section’s maintenance activities. However with revised accounting standards, any item over $10,000 in cost must be approved by City Council. To simply perform the needed steel work, the estimate was approximately $21,000. Staff contacted McNeilus and received a quote for a replacement tailgate for $26,000. With the extra $5,000 the truck will receive two new sweep and carrier cylinders, new sweep and carrier blades, and a new main hydraulic control valve. With this purchase, staff expects to extend the life of #185 from 12 to 14 years. Recommended Action: Authorize staff to purchase a replacement tailgate for refuse truck # 185 to McNeilus Truck in the amount of $26,000. These dollars are included in the current F.Y. 2006 Fleet Maintenance operating budget.
