Proceedings of the February 11, 2017 Work Session
A public meeting was held by the Lake Forest Historic Preservation Commission on
Saturday, February 11, 2017, at 10 a.m. in Market Square, Lake Forest, Illinois.
Historic Preservation Commissioners present: Chairman Bruce Grieve, Commissioners
Susan Athenson, Carol Gayle, Bill Redfield (arrived at 10:30 a.m.), Robert Alfe and Wells
Wheeler.
Commissioners absent: Elizabeth Sperry
City staff present: Kate McManus, Assistant Planner and Catherine Czerniak, Director of
Community Development
Other Attendees: Michael Fitzgerald, OKW Architects and Marcy Kerr, Lake Forest
Preservation Foundation
The Commission took a walking tour to observe signage and awnings in Market Square
on the adjacent buildings. The tour was part of the Commission’s continuing
consideration of changes to the signage regulations and guidelines that apply to this
area. The Commission walked around the Square and Mr. Fitzgerald reviewed the
existing signage and awnings and identified areas where changes are proposed. He
explained that due to the different architectural details found on the various store
fronts, particular types of signs area appropriate in some areas, and not in others. The
Commission considered the following topics:
Awnings
Awning Signs
Wall Signs
Projecting Signs
Window Signs
Door Signs
Specialty Signs
The purpose of the tour was to gather information and to allow the Commission to be
better informed about the proposed modifications to the signage regulations and the
reasons behind them. No decisions were made. The Commission will continue
consideration of this matter at a future meeting.
The tour adjourned at 11:15 a.m.
