I. CONSIDERATION OF BRUSH ARCHITECTS FOR RESTORATION AND
DESIGN/BID DOCUMENTS OF THE BARRELL MEMORIAL GATEWAY: Superintendent
Chuck Myers presented a proposal to hire Brush Architects out of Chicago for the investigation, design,
and creation of bid documents for the preservation/restoration of the Barrell Memorial Gateway. Myers
explained the process for the selection of Brush out of 14 submittals received from our Request for
Qualifications. Myers said that staff reviewed the submittals and interviewed 5 firms selecting Brush
based on qualifications and pricing.
Myers stated that by approving the contract now, he could get it to City Council for approval and with a
13 week project timeline we could go out to bid late summer. This, Myers said, would be perfect timing
for the masonry work to take place in the Fall with the cooler temperatures. Myers stated the amount of
the contract would be for $43,000 and includes a 20% contingency due to the unknowns that may be
encountered working with such an old structure.
Commissioner Hooke asked if we were approaching this as a preservation project or a restoration project.
Myers said that this leans more toward preservation. The idea is to care for what is there as much as
possible in its original material.
Motion by Chairman O’Brien, seconded by Commissioner Looby, to approve the contract for $43,000.00
with Brush Architects for the preservation design services for the Barrell Memorial Gateway.
